Australia’s freight industry is undergoing a major transformation as electric heavy vehicles roll out across key logistics networks.

According to the ATA-EVC report, electric trucks are not only viable—they’re essential for maintaining supply chain reliability while meeting net-zero targets.

Why? Fewer moving parts, lower maintenance costs, and zero tailpipe emissions. Electric trucks offer long-term operational and environmental benefits.

Australia is leading innovation in EV freight.

New Energy Transport has secured a site near Wilton, NSW, for the nation’s largest electric truck depot, aiming to host 200 electric prime movers by 2031.

Their recent 480km single-charge freight trial proved electric trucks can outperform diesel in speed and efficiency, marking a major step toward zero-emission logistics.

In Western Australia, the Rigid and Prime Mover Truck Electrification Project, backed by ARENA, is deploying 30 battery electric trucks powered by a fully off-grid solar and battery system. This scalable model addresses grid limitations and showcases clean energy solutions for freight operators.

Linfox has introduced 26 Volvo FH electric prime movers, expected to save up to 65 tonnes of CO₂ per truck annually. Operating from Green Star-rated distribution centres, these vehicles support both sustainability and efficiency goals.

Toll Group has also launched Volvo electric prime movers at its Arndell Park facility, integrating them into the steel supply chain to reduce emissions and noise.

Together, these initiatives reflect a growing commitment to cleaner, smarter freight across Australia.
